Annapolis Valley Register columnist Anne Crossman is a former journalist and media manager. She now does volunteer work in her community of Centrelea, Annapolis County. - ContributedCENTRELEA, N.S. — In these steamy days of July, one’s mind tends to wander – even more than usual.

In my mind that goes back a few years, Germany had one its best leaders in Angela Merkel. She seemed to suit the country that Germany had become – or the other way around. She was strong, she stood up to the major leaders in the world when it was needed. Her nation felt reasonable when she was there.

The contrast between Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin is like chalk and cheese. Now when this generation thinks of Ukraine, they will think of their strong leader during a horrendous assault on his country. While I doubt that all of Russia – and it is very big, remember – thinks that Putin is the greatest, I doubt that he truly represents his whole country.

It may be a bit dangerous to say that our prime minister represents who we are as a country. I realize not everyone likes him, not everyone likes the Liberals, but he seems to be the kind of person who represents who we are as a country on the world stage. We really are rather small compared to the big powers. What we do have is land and water. They would seem to be more precious commodities as time goes by.
