BERWICK, N.S. — Just like books or other media, Annapolis Valley residents in need of a mobile, wireless internet connection can now borrow a device from the regional library.
Charlotte Janes, president of @NS, said the need for wider internet connectivity was brought into sharper focus when people were isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said their mission is to have people at the community level making the best possible use of technology.Charlotte Janes, president of @NS, and Julia Merritt, Annapolis Valley Regional Library CEO, with one of the Kajeet SmartSpot wireless internet devices that library members can now borrow.
She said the devices are proving extremely popular. Twenty Kajeet SmartSpots have been provided to the AVRL network. Each branch received between one and three of the devices, depending on the size and population of the area served. AVRL CEO Julia Merritt said libraries have always been about accessing information and technology in all its evolving forms.
Merritt said internet has become an essential component of life, whether it’s to interact with government, do banking, or to connect socially with family and friends. Programs like the wireless hotspot device loan program that help mitigate impacts of infrastructure gaps are very important. Merritt said that with the AVRL offering four-week loans, plus the turnaround time involved, this would equate to almost a year-long waiting list from the start. The AVRL could use four or five times the number of Kajeet SmartSpots they have today to address the anticipated demand.
