The funding will help the organization that support survivors of human trafficking as they negotiate the court process
A local grassroots organization focused on the support and protection of survivors of human trafficking has been given a big boost in the form of $100,000 from the Law Foundation of Ontario.
“I noticed that a lot of victims were hesitant to go through the court process, and for good reason,” Scarpellini said, referring to the retraumatization that can often happen when someone is asked to tell a terrible and personal story over and over, and be grilled about its intimate details. AOH has been providing free services in both official languages to survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation and their families for the last six years. Since 2015, AOH said it has supported 200 survivors and their families with services such as mental health and addictions counselling, peer support and community referrals.
This project aims to benefit survivors of human trafficking in Northeastern Ontario, specifically through providing court support, counselling and wrap-around supports, but will also be available province-wide through the Angels of Hope website, found here.
