In the 2019 elections, the ANC secured 54% of the vote in KZN, but this dropped to 17% in the 2024 general elections.

The ANC's national working committee met with KZN leadership in Boksburg to address the decline, with Mbalula emphasizing the need for collective accountability rather than blame. Party spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri acknowledged the ANC's weakness in KZN and the challenges they face
