He said that, while the parties had met late last month to try to address the growing rift between them, the ANC had failed to commit to the plan to finalise talks on their working relationship, including through a meeting which had been scheduled for this past week. “If the ANC doesn’t come to the table now, it will mean we’re literally giving away the province of KwaZulu-Natal to the IFP and, for us, we’ve reached the stage where we have to take a decision to defend ourselves,” he said.
“We’ll have to look at how this would affect the municipalities and what we’ll do if we rescind our 2021 agreement of working with the ANC.Currently it doesn’t work for us, because it’s as if we have to beg the ANC even to consult us. It’s very easy having meetings with the EFF as our partner in the province, but the ANC’s very arrogant.
While the IFP holds eight seats in the Zululand council, the ANC and the NFP control two seats, with the remaining one occupied by the EFF.In Nongoma, the IFP controls 21 of the 45 seats, while the ANC-NFP-EFF bloc enjoys a 23-seat majority, with the NFP having 13 and the ANC eight.
