local Ukrainians for more than five decades
“We appreciated each and every contribution. We are thankful for every penny,” he said. “We just had enough to cover all the expenses, to pay for food and for gifts and whatever we had to purchase for running the arts and programs for them.” Organizers had the children introduce themselves and mark their hometowns on a map of Ukraine. Many of them marked locations that are now controlled by Russia.
An art project also provided a dose of reality. The children painted panels for a mural and many of them chose to depict scenes that showed how their lives had been disturbed by the war.
