ICYMI: 'Strangers in a new place': Ukrainian kids are welcomed to Montreal day camp
He, his mom and his elder sister fled Odessa in May to come to Montreal. Because the Ukrainian government has prohibited men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the country, Klieshchov’s father — and the family dog — remain in Ukraine.
Depending on their financial situations, parents pay a sliding fee ranging between $40 and $150 weekly. But this summer, camp fees are waived for the Ukrainian youngsters, nearly all of whom live with only their mothers. Funding comes from such organizations as the United Church of Canada Foundation, the St. James United Church, the federal government’s Young Canada Works program and private donors.
Klieshchov is one of the few Ukrainian campers who can already communicate in either English or French. In Odessa, he took extra after-school English-language classes.
