Margaret Jane (Elms) Gero was helping to deliver babies at age 10 and working as a domestic servant by 11 but she was 50 before she achieved her dream of having a home of her own, a modest house relocated to New Glasgow’s Vale Road.

The New Glasgow her grandmother came to work in as a young teenager was largely a caring community with no restrictions on where Black families lived or shopped, she noted. With extensive research detailed in a bibliography, States traced her grandmother’s family back to Alexander Elms who arrived in Port Mouton on a military ship in 1783. A Black Loyalist who bought his freedom, he was promised land. It took years and when he did get land, it was poor land, well inland from Tracadie harbour. A carpenter, he built houses for others but his own family’s winter shelter was an underground pithouse with spruce boughs for a floor.

When she married a second time it was to Joe Gero, a First World War veteran, who had grown up in Upper Big Tracadie but left the family farm to work as a coal miner in Pictou County. But it was also in Thorburn that Maggie tragically lost her daughter, Mary. The public story, which was also passed down through the family, was that she got sick, developed pneumonia and died at 14 but States uncovered a different scenario.
