First Nations and Ottawa may meet this month to discuss conditions that will guide a regional assessment of the Ring of Fire. Read on.

The First Nations are “almost there,” but working on building this structure hasn’t been easy, said Kate Kempton, a lawyer representing several First Nations communities that would be affected by mining in the Ring of Fire.

Both the federal and Ontario governments believe the Ring of Fire, located about 500 kilometres from Thunder Bay, Ont., has the potential to produce minerals — such as nickel and copper — currently in high demand as countries look to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels.. Currently, the processing of battery minerals is controlled by China, but Canada, along with the United States, has taken several steps in the past year to lessen its dependence on the Asian country.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government, though, has been vocal in its support for mining in the region. It is currently working on building an all-season pathway to connect the Ring of Fire with manufacturers in the southern part of the province.
