The members of Alexisonfire have a soft spot for the city of Ottawa that dates back to the Southern Ontario rockers’ sweaty club gigs at places like Club SAW…
But what lead vocalist George Pettit saw from the truckers who invaded the downtown core last winter didn’t align with either his view of the nation’s capital, nor his conception of freedom.
“They’ve taken something beautiful and abused it,” he said. “What they’re describing isn’t freedom. They’re describing it as doing what you want to do and that isn’t freedom. We’re only free up to the point that our freedom encroaches others’ freedom.” Of course, with touring suddenly cancelled in 2020, Alexisonfire was derailed by the pandemic, too, but instead of letting their angst disrupt the country, the band channelled it into a ferocious new album called Otherness, their first in 13 years.burning behemoth of raging psychedelia.” It captures the sense of feeling like a misfit, the start of a thread that became a theme for the album.
When Pettit and his Alexisonfire bandmates — Dallas Green, Wade MacNeil, Chris Steele and Jordan Hastings — decided to get together to make music during the pandemic, they had no expectations that an album would result from their casual hangouts. As Pettit puts it, “We were mostly like, let’s play some songs in a room together and order a pizza. That’s about as far as it got.”
That’s saying a lot, considering this is a band that broke up a decade ago largely because singer-guitarist Dallas Green wanted to focus on his commercially successful solo project, City and Colour, and had been having health issues trying to juggle both bands.
