Did Ottawa truly understand the impacts of closing most salmon fisheries on the Pacific coast? We must ensure we’re building policies that allow ecosystems, coastal economies and food systems to thrive — and that no communities are left behind. Opinion

Twenty-one years ago, I married into a fishing family. Soon after, we started Skipper Otto to help connect customers with locally sourced and sustainably harvested seafood. The spring is always the busiest time — there are boats to prepare for the season, fishing nets to repair, staff to hire and operations to launch.

Without a co-ordinated approach to marine management that includes an on-the-ground perspective from those in British Columbia who live and rely on these waters, announcements like the salmon closures can leave harvesters and coastal communities in a serious lurch, and seemingly without a voice or recourse.

I’m feeling a renewed sense of hope from participating in government dialogue and listening sessions. With a number of stakeholders around the same table, we collectively have an accountability mechanism now: a provincial voice in marine management who is listening to, understanding the needs of and representing coastal communities and economies.
