Abusive passengers could find themselves put on a no-fly list if a new bill is passed, but tackling the triggers for disruption is vital 🖋️ SophieLamTravel for ipaperviews

In 2017, a select committee recommended that the Government revoke the exemptions of the Licensing Act that apply to international airports in England and Wales, where licensing rules and restrictions do not apply. Following a year-long consultation, it was concluded that there was not enough evidence to do so, citing the economic disadvantages of applying the law airside and respondents concerned about the potential loss of revenue.

But this week, an “independent and award-winning wine bar and urban winery” opened in the airport’s south terminal, complete with “100 lovingly selected wines to explore on… self-pour wine machines” alongside a self-pour beer wall. With pints costing as much as £9 and the cheapest glass of wine £7.90, it’s hardly targeting binge drinkers, but it’s there for those that want it.

Diverting flights costs airlines dearly – between £10,000 and £80,000 according to the Civil Aviation Authority. It’s also a huge inconvenience to passengers who might find themselves delayed for hours in the wrong country.
