“The notion behind it is a last resort,” said Smith, adding she wants to try “every other option first.” Smith’s comments came at an announcement the UCP government had reached a memorandum of understanding to fund a new 75-bed recovery community facility on Enoch land, just west of Edmonton, as part of its 2023 budget, first released in February. Smith said the planned facility will be able to support up to 300 people each year.

“When an individual is in psychosis, and that individual is trying to harm themselves, you have to give them a glimmer of hope … I definitely would be open to that aspect but it’s voluntary, but if I had a family member that I had seen that was struggling with heroin and overdosing five times in a day and we’re Narcanning them, absolutely I would give them that option,” said Thomas, referring to Narcan, a medicine that can help people who are overdosing on an opioid.
