Air Canada has become the first airline in the nation to roll out facial recognition technology for passenger identification, according to a release Tuesday.

Select travellers flying from Vancouver YVR andairports are being invited to try the new facial recognition system in lieu of the traditional boarding pass and government ID-verification.

“Air Canada is interested in testing this process using leading technology to validate customer identification quickly, securely and accurately,” they said. “Digital profiles and credentials are encrypted and stored only on the passenger’s device. Only the passenger can share them with their consent,” the spokesperson said. “Passengers may elect to delete their digital profile/faceprint any time they wish.”

Should the experiment go well, the company is poised to roll out the technology to more Canadian airports and Maple Leaf Lounges, according to a release.
