One of the partners who helped with the production of Last of the Right Whales was the Canadian Wildlife Federation, which also works in First Nation communities to educate about safe fishing practices. In collaboration with them, the idea was born to produce a Mi'kmaw dubbed version of Last of the Right Whales to help engage fishers across Mi'kma'ki.
Being recorded at Soundpark Studios in Coxheath, the voice actors are from different bands in Unama'ki . The translation was done by one of the voice actors, Anne Marie Marchand from Potlotek. "I went to the company that usually does dubbing for me and they were like, just, no, we can't. We can't do that," Pequenza said.
"When you are looking for Mi'kmaq voice-over actors, you're talking about a language that hasn't been supported or widely spoken or even taught in schools, so finding voice actors who speak the language, it doesn't really exist as a profession, you know, the same way it would for you to find a French actor," said Pequenza.
"They are all doing it part-time. They all have full-time jobs. It's a real commitment to the language and the preservation of the language and of helping others to learn it," said Pequenza, a multi-award-winning director.Aware there are many different dialects of Mi'kmaw, Pequenza said they learned there were even discrepancies in word pronunciation or meaning within communities. The production worked hard to get this right.
