STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSActors and singers who performed under her leadership in those years were sad to learn the former school teacher, musician and director died Sunday in London, Ont., where she had settled after leaving St. John’s decades ago.According to her obituary, Toll had a hand in several activities during and after her tenure teaching music at I.J. Samson Junior High School.
“Although Frances was a shy and reserved person in her private life, this did not stop her from performing for many distinguished Newfoundlanders and visitors, including different Newfoundland and Labrador lieutenant-governors, the premiers of Canada, Dame Vera Lynn, Pope John Paul II and the King and Queen of Belgium,” stated her obituary.David Brown, who collaborated with her on a few musical productions at the Arts and Culture Centre, says they made for a good team.
“She put together one of the first truly successful choral groups in the city, which was also the kick-starter for many people, like myself, who went on to sing in community choirs for years to come,” Power wrote. Toll briefly took up a career in real estate after her St. John’s years, but was soon lured back to her first love.
