Between 45% and 63% of people reported that the lockdown would make it difficult to pay bills, debts, earn income, feed their families and keep their jobs.

The majority of people responding to a survey by the Human Sciences Research Council believe that the national lockdown will impact on their financial security.

More than half of informal settlement residents had no money for food and, about two-thirds of residents from townships, also had no money for food, the survey found. The survey was carried out between 7 April and 16 April and over 19,000 respondents participated. Of those, 36% were unemployed and 10% had informal or part-time work. The survey set out to understand what South Africans know, and how they are reacting to, the Covid-19 emergency.
