The Maui vacation rental Kahana Sunset has been battling sea level rise and wave erosion for decades.
“They should invest money in the removal of this building,” Kai Nishiki, a shoreline advocate,on July 12. “Then it removes the threat to public health and safety, and it restores public access to the beach.”
When the 79-unit Kahana Sunset was built on Maui in 1971, one of its six buildings, beachfront building “F,” was 15 feet away from the shoreline. In 2014, it was only 8 feet away. Today, building F is oceanfront. It consists of 12 townhouse units and is no longer occupied. It was forced to close in July 2020 when damage caused the structure to be deemed unsafe. Earlier this year, waves were seen crashing over the entire building when winter swells hit the island.
When the Kahana Sunset opened in 1971, the beachfront building was 15 feet away from the shoreline. Today, the building is oceanfront.Wave erosion is nothing new to this resort. It’s been dealing with erosion since at least 1978, just a few years after it was built. Back then, the Kahana Sunset Condominium Association requested to fill in the shoreline, according to a 1978 Honolulu Advertiser article.
The Maui Planning Department has been “involved in repairs to Building F and its seawall since 2007” due to repeated coastal damages,The Kahana Sunset has been battling erosion for decades. He also wrote that the condo owners need to “accept reality” and that he hopes they’ll support a managed retreat strategy.
