A Cederberg winter getaway with a brand-new Landie!
The Land Rover Defender Outbound Ingenium is tough as nails and conditions like wet weather or rough dirt roads are no match for this hardy SUV.A Cape winter has a charm of its own. Yes, it’s cold and wet, but if you have the right equipment and travel plan, it’s a time of year where you can experience something completely different to what you’ll find in the warmer months in a place like the Cederberg.
We drive past Wolseley’s vineyards and blueberry orchards and barely two hours after our departure from Durbanville, the Mitchell’s pass leads us into Ceres. It’s time for hot coffee and fresh baked goods at the , which is on the left just as you drive into town. This little bakery is well-known for its home baked goods. The pot pies and toasted sourdough breads are legendary.
From here we keep along the Olifants River on our left until we hop on the N7 just before Klawervlei for the final push to Clanwilliam. Simbavati Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge lies about 4 km north of the town, amongst fynbos on a 3 000 ha farm. Tonight, we eat lamb and vegetables from the district with freshly baked bread, complemented by Cederberg winery’s fine Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards for this wine lie more than 1000 m above sea level - officially the Western Cape’s highest wine cellar! This morning, after breakfast, we drive a large circular route of 80 km from Simbavati, north past the Bulshoek Dam where we turn right onto the dirt road that runs past the Bushman’s Cave Mountain Theatre.
