Police chief cites 'lack of supervision' as major problem in beating of Black man caught on cameraA memorial for Tyre Nichols is seen at the Embrace statue in Boston, Mass., on Jan. 28. A growing number of police and fire officials in Memphis, Tenn., have been fired or disciplined in the killing of Nichols, who died on Jan. 10, three days after he was severely beaten by police during a traffic stop.
Based on the nature of the call and information they were told by police, Long and Sandridge "failed to conduct an adequate patient assessment of Mr. Nichols," the statement said. A still from video footage released Friday shows Memphis police officers restraining and beating Nichols, 29. He died three days after his Jan. 7 arrest.
Hemphill was the third officer at a traffic stop that preceded the violent arrest, but he was not at the scene where Nichols was beaten, his lawyer Lee Gerald said, noting that Hemphill turned on his body camera, in line with department policy. Memphis police spokesperson Karen Rudolph said information on disciplinary action taken against Hemphill was not immediately released because Hemphill was not fired.
