ICYMI: Alberta police chiefs condemn violence by Memphis officers in death of Tyre Nichols

Tyre Nichols was pulled over during a traffic stop on Jan. 7 before he was beaten by five police officers, all of whom are Black. The association said officers take an oath to serve and protect and they recognize that when an “appalling incident” like the one in Memphis happens, policing as an institution comes under increased scrutiny. They asked community leaders to continue to work with them to build bridges locally with communities across Alberta.We categorically condemn the actions that resulted in the senseless loss of life.

“The concerning actions of the officers involved in the Tyre Nichols case will most certainly have a detrimental impact on the community’s trust and confidence with the Memphis Police Department,” said CACP. “As police leaders, we recognize that the actions of these officers will also impact the trust and confidence in policing throughout the United States and Canada.”

“The fact that policing isn’t just a local issue, it is part of our culture, we have to respond to this,” said King. “There’s always the worry that policing is moving in a way that may not be the way we want it to go.”Article content
