Late on Monday, the CODECO group attacked the Djaiba group of villages.
The eastern DRC has been troubled for decades by inter-ethnic bloodshed and militia violence, a crisis that has escalated in 2018., a village chief, a lawmaker and a member of a civil society said on Tuesday, with the eventual death toll expected to rise.
The head of the cluster of villages, located in Djugu territory in Ituri province, Jean Vianney, said CODECO group carried out the attack, which started at around 8 p.m. on Monday, killing 52 people. Lists from a civil society group in Ituri showed that 51 people were killed overnight from Monday to Tuesday. A Djaiba resident who survived the massacre, Daniel Kisembo, told Reuters he counted 51 bodies, most of them charred.
Provincial army spokesperson Jules Ngono said soldiers tried to help but arrived too late to avoid the carnage.
