Gaza cease fire deal imminent
Buildings lie in ruin in North Gaza , amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, as seen from Israel, January 13, 2025.Anticipation continues to build towards a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas after the Palestinian group accepted a draft agreement put to the parties this week.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, “Over the past several weeks, our intensive efforts have brought us to the brink of full and final agreement. On Sunday , the United States, Qatar and Egypt put forward a final proposal. The ball is now in Hamas’s court. If Hamas accepts the deal is ready to be concluded and implemented, I believe we will get a ceasefire.
If the deal in its current form goes ahead, fighting would stop in Gaza for 42 days that would see the phased release of 33 Israeli hostages over a number of days in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.Based on the successful implementation of phase 1, a second phase is mooted when the remaining living hostages would be exchanged for an undisclosed number of Palestinian prisoners and the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
