Vancouver\u002Dbased Filipinx MC is making music that connects across borders.
AOC rapping along to verse proclaiming “If I lose my s–t right now/ Will I just be dismissed right now,” was a surprise to K!mmortal, who still isn’t sure how the progressive politician came to the music. But the rage behind Sad Femme Club had been understood and expressed. It was a deeply moving moment for the queer, non-binary Filipinx-Canadian artist born Kim Villagante.
“I got a message from a friend that @aoc had tagged me in her story and was using the song as her anthem to watching the ridiculousness of what was taking place in the hearings,” said K!mmortal. “How she found the song is still a mystery, but I’m so glad that it empowered her and gave her strength. I love the way in music that a song that was made years ago can suddenly wake up from a nap, run a mile and reach a larger community.
This summer, the rapper is making the rounds across B.C. and across Canada reaching even more folks. New tracks such as the testimonial “K I’m Mortal” and coming new single “This Dyke” are all in preparation for the new album due in November.
: X Marks the Swirl took almost five years to complete and I had been performing the songs for a few years before I got into the studio. I’m really proud of it, but this time I’m pushing it out and going for it. The material was all written over the past two years and there is something to say for art that you create with a deadline. It is what it is and you are done with it. It’s fun.
