Evan Smith was serving a 23-to 47-year sentence for third-degree murder.

An inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Benner Township in Centre County died on Tuesday, according to a press release from the prison.

Officials say Evan Smith, 39, was found in his cell unresponsive. Staff and medical personnel performed life-saving measures but until EMS arrived.Smith was serving a 23-to 47-year sentence for third-degree murder. He first arrived at the prison on March 30. State police are conducting an investigation.
