“With cancer, it affects so many people. . . . It’s close to home with friends and family so it’s time we do something to end this cancer. So that’s one of the biggest reasons why we stepped up to make a little bit of a difference,” said Mickey MacDonald.

Mickey MacDonald holds his daughter, Sophie, 10, after speaking of his family's donation to the QEII Foundation at a news conference at the Discovery Centre on Thursday. - Eric WynneThe largest single donation ever made to the QEII FoundationThe MacDonald family, including successful entrepreneurs Mickey and Colin MacDonald, made the donation in honour of their parents, Colin and Belle MacDonald.

Sometime in the future when there’s a new cancer-care facility, it will bear the names of Colin and Belle MacDonald. Belle, who was a nurse at the Halifax Infirmary, died of colon cancer in 2000. “It will enable us to increase our efforts in advancing technologies in personalized medicine, to improve cancer patients’ care in a way that minimizes side effects and shortens treatment time, while achieving better outcomes.”

“All have been introduced in Nova Scotia and have been available for some patients with certain kinds of cancer, but this investment in cancer care provides the opportunity to expand the use of these and other personalized approaches to treatment at a never-before-seen magnitude.” “People often ask me, how do I do it, how do I stay so positive and the answer to that is quite simple: it’s hope,” she told the crowd.Early this year, she was an active, healthy 56-year-old who dismissed bloating and abdominal discomfort as menopause. When it escalated to vaginal bleeding, she knew something was very wrong.

It’s not going to be easy, she said, but she’s looking forward to the opportunity to extend her life.
