The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) urges the government and medical schemes to improve mental healthcare for individuals with schizophrenia, in line with international goals and national policies.

Schizophrenia , although affecting only about one per cent of the population, is a profound mental illness for which over 80 per cent of individuals do not receive the essential mental healthcare needed.

The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) calls upon the government and medical schemes to enhance mental healthcare for individuals with schizophrenia, aligning with the United Nations sustainable development goals, the World Health Organisation's comprehensive mental health action plan 2013–2030, and South Africa's national mental health policy framework and strategic plan (2023-2030).
