A StatsSA household survey found that fewer than 500,000 South African households have solar panels installed.
Statistics South Africa’s 2023 household survey revealed that only 2.5% of the country’s households have solar panels installed, whereas nearly four times as many have home theatre system s.that, based on the 2017 mid-year population estimates, South Africa had an estimated 19 million households as of 2023.Therefore, around 475,000 households in South Africa have solar panels.Solar energy was most common in metropolitan households, with 4.6% having solar geysers and 3.4% having solar panels.
This is because the country’s dry western interior receives more than 80% of the maximum possible sunshine hours yearly. KwaZulu-Natal, the province with the second-highest household count, is considered to be the worst province for solar energy generation due to its low annual hours of sunshine.
