Western Cape Minibus Taxi Fares to Increase, Causing Commuters' Frustration

Minibus taxi fares in the Western Cape are set to rise next week, leading to increased travel costs for commuters already struggling with high transport expenses.

Minibus taxi fares are going up in the Western Cape next week, and cash-strapped commuters are voicing their frustrations about the pressure they face. From Monday, local taxi passengers will pay between R2 and R5 more per trip, while long-distance travel between Cape Town and the Eastern Cape will increase by R150.

Taxi associations in the province announced the fare hikes on Thursday, citing rising operational costs, particularly ongoing fuel price increases linked to conflict in the Middle East. Cape Town commuters noted that transport costs are already eating into a large portion of their monthly income, and the latest taxi fare increases will only make matters worse. Many said they are struggling to make ends meet and fear they may no longer be able to afford daily travel to work.

"I have to take two taxis, both the normal taxi that I take, then the local one, also when I get off to get inside the location. Now the money for the week is too much. I'm not sure how I will be able to afford that with the salary that's not going up, because I'm already spending R1,000 a month for this," said one affected commuter.

The taxi industry leaders have apologised to commuters for the short notice, adding that there are currently no plans for further fare hikes, despite expectations of another fuel price increase next month.
