Councilman Clayton Perry has yet to file for re-election or publicly comment on if he will...
John Davenport, STAFF / San Antonio Express-NewsAttorney Marc Whyte had been seen as a strong contender to replace District 10 Councilman Clayton Perry — that is, whenever the three-term incumbent was ready to step down or if he reached the end of his term limits on City Council. But he’s politically damaged, accused of drunken driving and fleeing the scene of an accident on Nov. 6.
“The encouragement I have been receiving to run for the seat has really grown,” said Whyte, 42, who ran unsuccessfully in the 2018 Republican primary in Texas House District 121. “The community, and by that I mean some of the neighborhood leaders along with additional business community folks — I feel like I have been hearing from them every day, and the message has been that it is time for a change in leadership here in District 10.”Filing for City Council races opened Wednesday morning.
Last week, Perry told the Express-News that he hadn’t decided yet whether he’ll run for re-election. He did not respond to an interview request on Tuesday.soon after his alleged hit-and-run came to light. For the time being, Nirenberg has no plans to give back Perry’s committee assignments, said Bruce Davidson, a spokesman for the mayor.
Whyte said he befriended Perry about eight years ago as they worked together in the Northeast Neighborhood Alliance, a group focused on streets, drainage, public safety and other community issues.
