None of three officers involved in the incident were injured, though the officer who shot the man was taken to a hospital for observation, the task force said.
Authorities said the incident began at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday when a woman called police to report a male relative was attempting to break into her home in the 2800 block of Ezra Avenue. The woman said she had gotten a court protective order against the man.
Two officers responded to the address and located the man near the back door, police said. When officers began speaking to him, police said, the man turned around to face them and produced a firearm. He refused to drop the gun when ordered to do so and then began firing, according to police. The officers retreated, and the man ran off. About a block west of the residence, the man encountered the third officer, who shot him.
Police attempted lifesaving procedures until paramedics arrived and transported the man to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead. Police did confirm that the woman had obtained an order of protection against the man, 47, earlier in the day. However, he had not yet been served with the order, the task force said. A handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.
Zion police called in the task force to conduct an independent investigation. As with all officer-involved shootings, the results of the investigation will be turned over to the Lake County state’s attorney’s office for review and determination.
