Delivering a post-Cabinet briefing yesterday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Cabinet received a report on the probable impact of Freddy which was presented by Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo, whose ambit covers the Department of Civil Protection.
"Cabinet would like to assure the nation that all these measures are meant to avoid unnecessary loss of life. The public will be kept abreast of all developments on the matter," said Minister Mutsvangwa. Freddy was expected to move west over the Mozambique Channel making landfall in the early morning hours of tomorrow and quickly weakening over the next three days. But the Met Departments warns that the trajectory may change drastically and in any case the spinning cloud bands will touch Zimbabwe this evening.

Cyclone Freddy Makes Landfall in MadagascarTropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall on the east coast of Madagascar on the evening of February 21, 2023, NASA's Earth Observatory reports. The cyclone hit north of Mananjary around 7.20pm local time, with winds measuring about 130km (80 miles) per hour. The BBC reports that at least one person has died, with heavy rain and powerful winds tearing roofs off houses and triggering a storm surge. Schools have been shut and traffic has been suspended. Cyclone tracking website Force Thirteen reports that Freddy is likely to emerge over the Mozambique channel as a tropical depression or weak tropical storm, before potentially rapidly intensifying as it heads towards southern Mozambique, where it could once again reach hurricane strength.Indications suggest in excess of 250mm of rainfall in the Beira area, and potentially even higher towards the capital Maputo, with severe rainfall potentially crossing into Zimbabwe, South Africa, and eSwatini. The storm is expected to dissipate completely at the weekend, the website says.
