A Zimbabwean content creator, Ndoyisile Sibindi, sparked outrage after a video criticizing Tembisa residents for frequenting the Mall of Africa went viral. Many accused him of classism, while he defended his words as a misinterpreted joke.
A Zimbabwean-born content creator , Ndoyisile Sibindi, has found himself in hot water following a controversial video in which he criticised Tembisa residents for allegedly overcrowding the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. The remarks, which have gone viral on social media, have sparked outrage among Tembisa residents and South Africans at large, with many accusing him of classism and insensitivity.
\Ndoyisile Sibindi, who is now based in Johannesburg, posted a TikTok video that triggered the backlash. In the video, he questioned why Tembisa residents were frequenting the Mall of Africa, saying: “I think Tembisa residents are the ones who make the Mall of Africa. Don’t you have a mall in Tembisa? Are you telling me that you leave Mall of Tembisa to Mall of Africa? People are just gallivanting and they are just occupying the Mall of Africa for no reason. It is so uncomfortable for us who are claustrophobic.” \These comments did not sit well with the public, who criticized Ndoyisile for his apparent disregard for the diverse socio-economic realities of South Africans. The Mall of Africa, one of the largest shopping centers on the continent, is a popular destination for people from all walks of life, including residents of Tembisa, a neighboring township.Outraged by the remarks, many Tembisa residents took to social media to express their discontent. Some accused Ndoyisile of forgetting his own roots, while others labeled his statements as elitist and insensitive. The backlash extended beyond Tembisa, with many South Africans defending the right of all citizens to access public spaces like the Mall of Africa. \In response to the uproar, Ndoyisile released a follow-up video in which he apologized for his remarks. He explained that the video was intended as a joke and that his comments were misconstrued. “I am sorry if I offended you. It was not my intention. It was just a joke. I went to the mall with an intention of vlogging, but when I got there, the mall was full, and I could not shoot my content,”“Those words did not come from a place of being a classic or telling people that they should not go to the mall,”He also noted that the video in question was never officially posted on his TikTok account, suggesting that it may have been shared without his permission. Despite the criticism, Ndoyisile remains proud of his Zimbabwean roots and refuses to let the backlash affect his identity
