Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized NATO leaders Tuesday following reports that they had discussed extending an invitation to Ukraine to join the alliance once certain conditions are met.

that NATO officials were working on a draft document that would include a pledge to invite Ukraine to join “when allies agree and conditions are met.”

The report doesn’t mention what exact “conditions” the members want in place before extending the invitation. All member nations of NATO are set to meet for a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, on Tuesday and Ukraine has also been invited to attend.Ukraine is open to conversation about its membership but “we received signals that certain wording is being discussed without Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian president pointed out that the draft in question was simply a pledge for extending an invitation and not an approval for membership. Calling the reported draft “unprecedented and absurd,” Zelensky hit out at its inclusion of “vague wording about ‘conditions’” even though it is just a pledge for an invitation.: “It seems there is no readiness neither to invite Ukraine to NATO nor to make it a member of the Alliance. This means that a window of opportunity is being left to bargain Ukraine's membership in NATO in negotiations with Russia. And for Russia, this means motivation to continue its terror. Uncertainty is weakness.
