Zagime Anishinabek First Nation will receive $20.5 million from the federal and provincial government to make up for a Treaty land shortfall.

“We look forward to the benefits, for current and future generations, that will result from this settlement,” Chief Lynn Acoose said in a news release issued last week.

By signing the treaty in 1874, the Anishinaabe band was promised 128 acres per band member. At the time, there were 271 band members but they received 31,829 acres of land, enough for about 248 people and a shortfall of 2,859 acres. Treaty land entitlements are processes in which signatories to treaties with the Crown who did not receive the agreed-upon amount of land are compensated as the government fulfills its initial obligations.

The land can be purchased anywhere in Saskatchewan on a willing-buyer or willing-seller basis. Bands will sometimes establish reserve land in cities, like Piapot First Nation’s urban reserve in the City of Regina for example.
