The Islanders still need to figure out how to start games well. But as far as finishing them, they got their mojo back on Saturday.
After a listless opening 25 minutes, the Islanders fought back for a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jackets on Zach Parise’s overtime winner. The Islanders now will roll into a four-game road trip with a 10-6-0 record and momentum at their backs.
After a slow and listless first period on both sides, Columbus center Cole Sillinger opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 3:09 of the second, banging in Yegor Chinakhov’s rebound. Brock Nelson tied it for the Islanders just four minutes later, redirecting Mayfield’s pass to the doorstep in. During long stretches of play, though, especially early in the game, the Islanders looked a lot like the team that was shut out by the Coyotes on Thursday, playing deliberate and structured hockey that failed to yield offensive chances or allow a chance to assert themselves.
