This season, we saw 20 trades happen between Jan. 23, when the Lakers acquired Rui Hachimura, and Thursday’s deadline. One year later, talkhoops takes time to reassess the 2022 NBA trade deadline moves with the benefit of hindsight.
The Pacers were getting serious about the teardown, and the Kings were giving up a big time prospect. Indiana finally pulled the plug on a fledgling group, sending its All-Star big man to Sacramento. Giving up Haliburton for Sabonis was a risk. Technically, it was an upgrade of talent, but Sabonis had very limited success in Indiana. The Kings were desperate to start ending their playoff drought, and they gave up a great shooter in Hield and a really good point guard on a rookie contract.
Sabonis is an All-Star in his first full season with the Kings, and they’re battling for a top three seed in the West. Holiday was moved in thetrade, so it kept on giving. For the Pacers, Haliburton became a first-time All-Star on their watch. Hield remains a really important contributor and someone with great trade value moving forward. While the Pacers have some things to figure out with the rebuild still, I’m not sure it could have worked out better for both sides.Brilliantly.
