Our former mayor’s style has been described as thoughtful, cerebral but to the point. His guest column about where politicians must focus their attention to solve the deadly weapons problem concludes: “What must be done, though, is reassign this weapon of war from use against our little schoolchildren and fellow Americans to use against foreign enemies on the battlefield.
Several district attorneys and law enforcement officials have said they will not prosecute violators of laws — for example, those related to the recent abortion decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. This is very troubling. What if these same officials said they will not prosecute child predators, rapist, burglars or even people who commit serious crimes, based on their personal opinions and beliefs? This could become a dangerous slippery road.
When you accept the job, you should be expected to uphold the expectations that you have been sworn to uphold.Roe v. Wade was overturned, leaving women without federal abortion protection. Congress should adopt another Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to protect women’s equality, including health and reproductive health. But that requires their caring about women’s rights and well-being.
