New Pro Trailer Hitch Assist will be available across the F-150 and Super Duty lineup for 2023.
In the beginning, God created the spouse, in order that he or she might guide you as you backed up your truck to your trailer. In more recent years, we had backup cameras with guidance lines, eliminating the need for an extra set of eyes and allowing most of us to hook up a trailer on the first try. Or the second. Maybe the third if the hitch was obscured by shadows, as it so often seems to be.
This is where the magic begins: You hold the Pro Trailer button, and the truck slowly backs itself up, spinning the steering wheel as needed to get the truck aligned with the trailer. When the truck is within a couple of feet, it stops and the screen asks you to confirm that the trailer is cranked up high enough to clear the hitch. Once confirmed, the truck backs up a little farther, then stops and neatly shifts itself into Park.How accurate is it? Pretty darn accurate.
Of course, we only tried the system in the decent lighting at the Auto Show; we have yet to see how it performs in the real world. We've found that when relying on the backup camera, strong shadows can make it difficult to see the center of the hitch coupler. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist is primarily an optical system, so we're interested to see if has the same issue.
