The 27-year-old was raised by his unemployed grandmother in the dusty village of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, and often had to help put food on the table by doing odd jobs during his childhood.
The competition required postgraduate students to write an essay evaluating the impact of public infrastructure investment on economic growth based on South Africa’s post-2000 experience. They also had to discuss the impact of this on the country’s prospects for economic growth in the medium term. Mpini went on to say that most South Africans still do not have access to social and economic services due to poor governance and economic inability, and the country’s public infrastructure investments have been declining in recent years.
He said he did not choose economics – rather, it chose him, as it was one of the courses that were presented to him when he started higher education.
