The circumstances surrounding young Mets slugger being called up are unfortunate, but it's still chance
Though the circumstances surrounding Vientos being called up from Triple-A Syracuse are unfortunate — Starling Marte was placed on bereavement leave and has traveled back to the Dominican Republic — he’s going to get an “opportunity” here, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.“What happens today, tomorrow or the next day, who knows? You got to take it day by day,” Mendoza added, “be ready for your chance, he will be.”.
Vientos has adopted a new mentality since he was last with the team. Though he won’t admit to feeling frustrated after seeing his opportunity with the team slip when J.D. Martinez was signed, he does acknowledge a shift in thinking. Vientos is not in the Mets lineup in Game 2 against the Cardinals, but Mendoza says he’ll find a place for him to get some time.“Third base, DH, pinch-hit,” Mendoza says. “Like I said, he’ll be ready for whatever situation presents . It’s gonna be a day-to-day type deal... He’s played some games at first place down in Triple-A.
