Young LGBTQ+ people discuss why they are sharing their experiences in school

During Manchester Pride over the August bank holiday weekend, Deia Penn was one of the many volunteers and ambassadors working at the booth for LGBTQ+ youth charity Just Like Us.

It was a stark reminder to Deia that the work she does to help navigate LGBTQ+ youth today plays a crucial role in ensuring more people don’t grow up with those same experiences. As an ambassador for Just Like Us, Deia goes into schools to deliver workshops and talks to raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community and to help combat discrimination and bullying.

“Standing in an assembly hall and coming out to young people felt huge the first time, but every time I do it I acknowledge what I should have known all along; that my sexual orientation was only a big deal because the culture around me made it a taboo.” Charlie, 24, says that being able to share his story has not only benefited himself, but he also hopes it has let others feel seen and heard - especially at a time when there can be much discourse and debate surrounding the community.

Just Like Us are now opening up their network of ambassadors - and are looking for more volunteers in Manchester aged 18 to 25 to speak in schools about growing up LGBT+.
