Even Canadiens coach Marty St. Louis acknowledges being surprised at how seamlessly the foursome of Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj and Johnathan Kovacevic has been able to establish itself so quickly in the NHL.
Article content
Guhle, drafted 16th overall in 2020, had a mere three games of pro experience with the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket when the season began, but he has looked poised and polished while scoring one goal and 10 assists in 28 games so far. His average ice time of 20:34 ranks third among all NHL rookies, behind only Buffalo’s Owen Power and the Senators’ Jake Sanderson.Article content
Clearly, Sanderson and Guhle haven’t given in to the long-held notion that it usually takes years and hundreds of games for defencemen to find a comfortable home in the NHL. And then there’s Kovacevic, who has found his way into the everyday lineup after being plucked off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets. Kovacevic, 25, who played in the CCHL with the Ottawa Junior Senators and Hawkesbury Hawks, spent four seasons with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose without getting a shot with Winnipeg.
