There are many more benefits to having trees and shrubs in addition to the ones mentioned. For instance, a mature tree is able to transpire 1,000 gallons of water vapour up into the clouds every day that they are in leaf. This amount of vapour goes a very long way toward mitigating droughts. The less water vapour that goes up, the less rain that comes down. It is that simple. Not all rain comes from trees, but the amount that does may mean the difference between a profit or a loss each year.
Also, the shrubs that used to be growing along the fence lines performed the task of capturing and retaining soil humus, the most valuable component of the soil for nutrients and water retention, from blowing away into roadside ditches in winter. You will see this as you drive farmland roads in winter and see the brown snowdrifts. Again, this loss of humus reduces yields and quality of crops.
I believe that farmers in other parts of the province have already realized this and are starting to plant trees and establish shrub windbreaks. Maybe farmers here still have time to wake up and leave some trees and shrubs so they don’t have to spend so much to replace the ones they have destroyed.
