The SA Police Service’s crime statistics report released last month revealed that the VW Polo hatchback and sedan are the cars that are stolen most often, making up a third of all vehicles stolen in the country

There are various reasons for this – these are the best-selling cars in South Africa, so, statistically, they are more likely to be stolen and then used to commit other crimes, as they are inconspicuous.

Based on the police statistics, in terms of entry-level cars, the Toyota Etios and the Ford Figo are among the most likely to be stolen. The brands that are the least likely to be stolen are Subaru, Volvo and Chrysler. North says that, while the risk of car theft may affect the premium, theft and hijackings make up a relatively small percentage of what you are paying for when you buy insurance. The bulk of the premium is to cover accidents and related repair costs.

If you are driving a high-risk car, it is advisable to install a tracker and opt for additional benefits such as jamming alert, which detects whether someone has jammed your locking system.
