You’ll find this unusual throwback in just one SF BART station

Eager to improve upon its public image and boost revenue, BART formed a partnership with the Peninsula-headquartered video game company Atari, and on Dec. 1, staff rigged up a 7-foot-wide, six-sided Atari Arcade Theater Kiosk for riders to play on the Powell Street platform as they waited for their train to arrive.

Dec. 7, 1976: Atari debuted several new games in the Powell Street BART station, including Tank and Le Mans.

So the return of the retro games, in celebration of BART’s 50-year-anniversary, is somewhat of a novelty. Unlike the 1976 promotion, they can be played for free, and you don’t need to ride BART or Muni to access them — though riders are encouraged to do so, as Clipper card users get 50% off all fares throughout the month of September.

“BART Arcade” banners, as well as grainy retro footage from the transit agency’s early years, replaced what would have been the informational displays above the games. On Saturday, teenagers lugging their skateboards behind them swarmed the Space Invaders game, while a father hoisted his toddler up to the “Asteroids” screen so she could play.
