The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is encouraging unemployed youth to participate in the YearBeyond program. The program offers valuable work experience while contributing to their communities. Youth aged 15 to 34 remain vulnerable in South Africa 's labor market, with 4.8 million unemployed youth as of the third quarter of 2024. This initiative is a youth service partnership between the government, the National Youth Development Agency, donors, and NGOs.
The program, initially launched in the Western Cape, is now national and provides unemployed youth aged 18 to 25 with meaningful work experience. It aims to provide a pathway to further studies or employment while fostering a culture of community service. To qualify, participants must be between 18 and 25 years old, live within 5 kilometers of a YearBeyond site, and be registered on the National Population Register. Some program streams have additional criteria, such as minimum marks in languages or mathematics in Matric. Minister stated that youth unemployment and disillusionment remain pressing issues that require continuous attention. He believes that the YearBeyond program offers an opportunity for young people to gain practical experience, enhance their resumes, and develop essential skills for future employment. The program aims to provide support for youth to become successful adults. Despite the high unemployment rate, which is over 10% lower than in other provinces, the government remains committed to creating job opportunities for young people
