In a world increasingly shaped by generative AI, tertiary institutions must reskill students to both understand and apply technology in daily life and excel in essential human skills like creativity, critical thinking, and discernment, says Dr Riaan Steenberg of NetEd Group.
In the past year, generative artificial intelligence has burst onto the scene, taking no prisoners and holding traditional work processes and roles to ransom. Writers panicked, coders were astonished, and mothers all over the world found primary school oral assignments easier than ever before. You will be hard-pressed to find anyone in a professional capacity who has not dabbled in, or actively used, ChatGPT, in some form or the other.
Dr Riaan Steenberg, director of operations of the NetEd Group, the African education platform that incorporates Eduvos, Stellenbosch Business Institute and the DaVinci Business School, says the world is well and truly in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution. Steenberg adds that there is another level of “reskilling” that also needs to take place. Digital natives from Gen Z, extremely proficient in all things tech, are entering the workforce and need educational interventions and qualifications to develop the soft skills and creative capacities critical for navigating the world of work.
“That is how the human race is going to survive – taking the tools unlocked by AI, using the inspiration that we get from each other, and applying it to the problems that we need to solve,” says Steenberg.
