Yankees AL East rival looking for someone to head their baseball operations
Mike Hazen is one of the names discussed within the [Red Sox] organization as possible head of baseball ops. He’s under contract with the D-Backs through next season, with a club option for ‘25. The Red Sox would need permission to talk to him. Might be an opportunity for him to get an extension from Arizona.
Under Hazen, Boston won the division in 2016 but was swept by the then-Indians in the ALDS. Ironically, he started his career with Cleveland and was part of the organization from 2001-05. After the postseason, he decided to leave the Red Sox organization, where he had worked since 2006 and agreed to become executive vice president and GM of thein 2017, He immediately made an impact in Arizona, leading the team to their first postseason since 2011.
Since then, the Diamondbacks have not made it back to the postseason. They do currently hold one of the three Wild Card spots. Hazen, 47, is a Massachusetts native and is familiar with the Red Sox organization, making him a good candidate moving forward. He was a part of championship teams in 2008 and 2013.
Boston will need permission to speak to Hazen as he is currently under contract through the 2024 season, including a team option for 2025.
