Could Donaldson land with another team?
By releasing Donaldson, the Yankees did him a favor. The playoff eligibility deadline hits at midnight on Aug. 31. He’s still able to sign with a team and be considered for their postseason roster. The Yankees simply could have held him through the date he was set to return from the 60-day injured list, which was Sept. 15, and then released him. Considering he’s been increasing his workouts in recent weeks, it’s reasonable to think he could be ready to return to the field soon.
The question: What could Donaldson contribute and who would want him? Defensively, he still performs at a high level. But at the plate, he hasn’t lived up to his career reputation. In 106 at-bats this season, he’s hit 10 home runs with 15 hits overall, good for a .659 OPS. A team signing Donaldson would only have to pay him the remainder of the major-league minimum the rest of the season with the Yankees responsible for the rest of the money he’s owed.could look at Donaldson as an upgrade.
